Leesfragment: Het Amsterdam van Bernice Eisenstein

Illustrator en schrijfster Bernice Eisenstein (I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors, vertaald door Jenny de Jonge als Ik was een kind van Holocaust-overlevers) was de laatste twee maanden van dit jaar de writer in residence in het appartement boven Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum. Ze heeft het ingericht als studio, met de grote tafel als tekentafel, en zwerft met haar schetsboek door de stad. We mochten enkele van haar Amsterdamse tekeningen hier tonen.

Bernice Eisenstein bij haar aantreden als writer in residence:

'My new work has to do with a moment in time — the death of the Polish Jewish writer Bruno Schulz in 1942 — and a number of people from other times, both from the past and the present, who will be in his company at that moment. This means that the sense of chronological time is broken, and the characters I have selected have many purposes, both in what their own lives are about, their spirits, and what they have added to our understanding of the world. I have chosen a cast of characters so that art, music, literature, humour, science and philosophy are placed into the heart of the book, since one of my themes is reparation, and poetically finding balance in the world, and the value of collective memory, how it is protected and continues. [...]

Also, because I have this very special time to be in Amsterdam, and to wander and intimately discover the city, I intend to keep a sketchbook, a visual journal, of my time there, document my own sight and what that means. I have already gone on the internet and found a few art supply stores, one of which seems about a 15 minute walk from the apartment, and on their site, found what I thought would be the perfect sketchbook.'

Op een van de eerste zwerftochten door Amsterdam, van het Spui naar het Van Gogh Museum, werden haar portemonnee en bril gestolen.

In de schetsboeken van Eisenstein figureren verschillende cafébezoekers, in museumcafés, maar ook dichtbij, in café Hoppe, Luxembourg of De Zwarte. Hier 'Not far from "home" now. But far from home.' in Hoppe.

De dagen van een buitenlander in Amsterdam zijn gevuld met musea. Niet alleen Van Gogh, maar ook het tasjesmuseum, die een prettige verrasing blijkt.

Het boekproject van Eisenstein begint Spinoza te incorporeren. Ze werkt momenteel aan een portret van de grote verlichter aan de hand van het geschilderde portret en zijn teksten. Hier een tekening van het standbeeld bij de stopera.
