Leesfragment: LookLateral

Verse melk, strak gestileerde, verse melk. De melkfles op het Italiaans-Engelse LookLateral benadrukt actualiteit en vormgeving. De ondertitel is dan ook Fresh Art on Paper. LookLateral gaat over moderne kunst, graaft diep en is strak maar onderscheidend vormgegeven, met trefwoorden over de tekst, goedgekozen beeld, ruimhartig opgemaakte tekst in twee kolommen en een rode papieropsnee. Een genot om te lezen en bekijken - en uiterst interessant bovendien. In #2: Paolo Zani, Marc Spiegler, Mathieu Mercier, Matthias Bitzer, Marcel Broodthaers, Madrid, Bogotá, Singapore, videokunst, boekhandel, drukwerk.

Mooi gestructureerd bovendien, beginnend met ontbijt in Italië en 's nachts eindigend in Parijs. Lunch is in Rio de Janeiro. En de geïnterviewden zijn kunstenaars, maar ook bemiddelaars, waardoor het tijdschrift nog dichter op de verse melk zit. Galerist Paolo Zani, die het nummer opent, zegt:

'I think that here, once again, the skill of recognizing talent comes into play: there's a magical moment, almost an epiphany when I come into contact with the "right" artwork. My chords are touched and at the same time my rational side makes objective calculations: from the possibilites of production in numeric terms, to the technique, to the physical force invested in the creation of the work. The artist is surely an exceptional individual, but too often here in Italy we forget the craftsman element in them at that "moment of ecstacy" that gives life to an artwork and represents the very best of mankind.'

Voor ons is ook het interview met Antero Braga, eigenaar van Porto's mooiste boekhandel Lello (met kunstgallerij), interessant. Zijn selectiecriteria doen bekend aan:

'One: we want to have everything the others have. Two: to have everything the others don't even dream of having. There is a lot of research as far as our books are concerned.'
