David Grossmann wint de Man Booker International Prize 2017
15 juni 2017David Grossman en zijn vertaler Jessica Cohen zijn bekroond met de Man Booker International Prize 2017 voor A Horse Walks Into a Bar. Dat werd gisteravond bekendgemaakt.
De Man Booker International Prize werd voorheen elk tweede jaar toegekend aan auteurs voor hun oeuvre (Alice Munro (2009), Philip Roth (2011), Lydia Davis (2013 en László Krasznahorkai (2015)), maar is nu samengevoegd met de Independent International Foreign Fiction Prize, die een enkel boek bekroonde. Dat is nu ook de bedoeling van de samengevoegde prijs. Zowel de auteur als de vertaler krijgen prijzengeld, elk de helft. Eerder wonnen Han Kang (2016), Jenny Erpenbeck (2015), Hassan Blasim (2014), Gerbrand Bakker (2013), Aharon Appelfeld (2012), Santiago Roncagliolo (2011) en Philippe Claudel (2010).

‘David Grossman has attempted an ambitious high-wire act of a novel, and he’s pulled it off spectacularly. A Horse Walks into a Bar shines a spotlight on the effects of grief, without any hint of sentimentality. The central character is challenging and flawed, but completely compelling. We were bowled over by Grossman’s willingness to take emotional as well as stylistic risks: every sentence counts, every word matters in this supreme example of the writer’s craft.’
