Er is discussie over de beste boeken van het millennium ('so far', bij The Millions), en er zijn een aantal aardige sites die ingaan op uitspraak op dialect. Hoe spreek je 'Coetzee' uit, hoe praten mensen in Noordeloos en Finsterwolde, en filmpjes over taalvariatie.

Een van de grote online projecten deze zomer was de millenniumlijst van The Millions, waarin een jury én de lezers en gebruikers van de site hun beste titels van de 21ste eeuw tot nu toe noemden (weliswaar 950 jaar te vroeg, maar goed). Ook naar het Engels vertaalde titels kwamen in aanmerking, en dat maakt het wel een interessante lijst. Omdat álle lezers van The Millions de oproep kregen - wij ook - kwamen er veel reacties, over het nut van een lijst als deze, van lijsten in het algemeen:

Andrew Seal van Blogographia Literaria: 'if ordered lists like this must exist, to whom should we be listening to fill them?' De jury bestaat namelijk vooral uit schrijvers, en dat is, volgens hem, te zien.
Edmond Caldwell van Contra James Wood ziet een ongezonde (maar onvermijdelijke? - red.) statistiek: 'Of the 30 titles represented on the two lists (20 titles in each list, with 10 overlapping), 27 are published by imprints belonging to 5 of the Big Six conglomerates, leaving a whopping 3 titles published by “independent” houses. In other words about 90% of the titles come from the corporate majors.'
Reacties van Andrew Seal en Daniel Green op Caldwells kritiek: 'In the real literary world in which live, the only honest course of action is to refuse to join in on list-making in the first place, which would at the least be an acknowledgement that we can't make such simplified judgments about current or recent work given the pre-chosen samples which mainstream publishing makes available.'
