The Close-Up series is an innovative and accessible annual series devoted to the close analysis of film and television. Each volume contains three extended individual studies all dedicated to the detailed investigation of the many practical choices from setting and performance to camera position and movement, from lighting and colour to editing and the multiple possibilities of sound, that create a film's form and determine its meanings.

This study closely analyses the mise-en-scene and visual style of TV programmes including Hill Street Blues (1981-87), Miami Vice (1984-90), Homicide: Life on the Street (1993-99), NYPD Blue (1993-2006) and CSI (2000-present).

This study offers a detailed discussion on how film style conveys and articulates notions of masculinity, and analyses how mise-en-scene, rather than spectacle alone, shapes a sense of the masculine in films such as Raging Bull (1980) and The Right Stuff (1983).
