Elizabeth Day, known in the UK and beyond for her highly successful novels (such as The Party, 2017 and Paradise City, 2015), is an expert at bouncing back after life knocks you down. Tonight she will be our guide through the troubled waters of twenty-something life. Starting from personal experience, Day discovered with her podcast How to Fail – that grew into a book by the same name, published this year – just how meaningful it is to share what you have learned.
We will dive into Elizabeth Day’s life story, with the help of popular culture, and discuss how fictional characters (who are, usually, ‘failing’ at life) can be inspirational and motivational tools. Joining us as well is Dutch children’s book author and actress Maryam Hassouni, among other things actress in Flikken Rotterdam (2017), Soof (2013-16), Dunya and Desie (2008) and writer of Hoekjes van geluk (2017). In 2006 she experienced severe backlash from the industry after receiving an Emmy award, resulting in a better perspective towards emotional and professional pitfalls.
Together we ponder the following questions: What is real failure anyway? How do fiction stories help us deal with failure? (What) can you learn exactly from your setbacks?
