Voices: Reflections on The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek
10 april 2019On the 10th of April in Spui25 (5pm), Geoffrey Horrocks, emeritus Professor in Greek Linguistics at Cambridge University, will discuss the first appearance in a century of the full-scale reference grammar of the language of classical Greece.
The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek is the first comprehensive reference grammar of the language of classical Greece to appear in a century. It benefits from the major advances that have been made in areas like general, comparative and historical linguistics, and provides an up-to-date and detailed description of a language that is famous as well as notorious for its complexity and subtlety.
The language, literature and philosophy of the ancient Greeks are nowadays widely taught at grammar schools and universities and continue exerting influence on many aspects of our (post-)modern lives. To study this heritage, comprehensive works of reference are indispensable, and many have been published on various aspects of the ancient Greek world. To these is now added the Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek, which is the first full-scale reference grammar of the language of classical Greece to appear in a century. It benefits from the major advances that have been made in areas like general, comparative and historical linguistics, and provides an up-to-date and detailed description of a language that is famous as well as notorious for its complexity and subtlety. The grammar has been written by a team of Dutch scholars who were educated at the classics department of the University of Amsterdam. Professor Geoffrey Horrocks (Cambridge) will reflect in his lecture on the momentous occasion of the grammar's appearance, which will be celebrated afterwards.
