Love #21

Love #21 Spring / summer 2019 Magazine

If you’re not familiar with Maya Hawke yet, you soon will be: 2019 is her big-screen breakthrough year. The 20-year-old daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman and star of TV’s Stranger Things, she wrapped on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood last summer and is now working on Gia Coppola’s forthcoming romance, Mainstream. When LOVE asked the precocious young talent who she wanted to interview her, only one man would do: her old schoolmate, friend and fellow Hollywood actor, Lucas Hedges. Lucas and Maya met on a Thursday at 1pm in Midtown Manhattan by the East River and then walked to Maya’s apartment. They have known each other since Maya started at Saint Ann’s School in the ninth grade; Lucas was in the grade above her. They both have briefly studied at American drama schools before leaving to pursue professional work. Read the full interview in #LOVE21 which hits stands on February 28th, but for now, here the two talk about the career Maya hopes to have. Liam Hedges: Do you feel like you know the kind of career [you want]? Are you somebody that sets out to have a certain kind of thing, or are you really open to the mystery and try not to have any idea of it? Maya Hawke: I think it’s some kind of combination. I’m obsessive. I’m so in my head that I can’t not spend time planning, or thinking, or coming up with ideas, or ways in which I want to try to learn. But, really, I’m mostly open, and curious, and excited to see how things will unfold, and don’t have a large investment in things going one way or another. Planning just helps to spend the time, like when you’re falling asleep on an airplane, or at a subway stop.
