Red Eye Ann Shelton

Like photographer Nan Goldin, New Zealander Ann Shelton gets inside the worlds she's depicting -- worlds often pushed to the peripheries of mainstream culture. And though it's time zones away, these vivid snapshots of underground youth culture seem strikingly familiar. What's disarmingly fresh about Shelton's up-close portraits of the kitschy post-punk set -- in this case, Shelton's friends -- is the daring immediacy and wired energy of the images.
