A New Type of Imprint #7: Nordic Nostalgia

A New Type of Imprint is an Oslo-based creative lifestyle magazine that features Norwegian and Nordic culture published quarterly in English. Their aim, or at least their publisher Anti’s aim, is to connect this Nordic platform with the rest of the world, and to introduce the designers, artists and other creative minds featured in every issue to the rest of the world. Their seventh issue, which is available on - and offline now, features 'conversations on creativity and the spectacle of sports'. It's filled with narratives of fiction, reality, essays and visual features, and as a beautiful design and arts magazine tackling sports might seem like a gamble - but it certainly is not. Not if Nicklas Haslestad, the designer of the colorful visual morsels featured in issue seven, has anything to say about it.

 

A New Type 1

 

Reading A New Type of Imprint is almost like reading a romantic collection of short stories - Nordic nostalgia, we’d almost go so far as to call it. Not a word in this issue seems out of place, not thought through, not turned over and inside out at least a couple of times before going into print and being cemented in the world of publishing forever. And that’s exactly the magazine’s strength: it’s careful. Thoughtful of waste, they make sure with each issue they publish, to prove that what they’ve created is worth existing. And that’s merely on a meta level.

 

A New Type 2

 

On first glance this beautifully edited magazine holds tons and tons of interesting articles, pieces of fiction and incredible photo series – all there ready for consuming. It’s only when you start to read you see how well put-together A New Type of Imprint truly is. In true Scandinavian style the magazine is clean in its design – simple columns of text in a comfortable font, full-page photographs in bright colors of artwork or stylish Norwegians interviewed at their breakfast table. Yet moreover it’s the little things like the nostalgic, almost poetic, editor’s note by Veronica Mike Solheim, the interview with the inspiring artist Sverre Malling with the cool beard who spent ten months on a single drawing of a muskox, or the feature on the illustrator Peter-John de Villiers who lives in an idyllic barn in the middle of nowhere, that show the authenticity of the magazine’s character. We’ve seen a lot of white-space, straight-lined, beautifully printed on thick white paper coffee-table mags these past years, featuring gorgeous design and even more gorgeous people – yet A New Type of Imprint, though it fits all these criteria, is – simply put – clever.

 

A New Type 3

 

A New Type of Imprint is a magazine that has proven itself in seven issues to deserve to exist in print (even though their blog is definitely worth a visit and their Instagram to be scrolled through at least once a week) simple for its romanticism, honesty and brains. The issue features over 160 pages of visual and textual morsels, including a very interesting ‘chapter’ on sports design that shouldn’t be missed, in true Nordic style.
