The Plant #9: Bowie flower arrangements, dandelion paperweights and floral ice-cream

12 augustus 2016, Athenaeum Nieuwscentrum

The Plant is a majestic sort of magazine: it’s an epitome of the coming together of mankind and plants of every sort, size and shape. It celebrates the art of nature, man-made or wild, the power of plants, edible or poisonous, and the beauty of all of these in relationship to one another. More than a simple collection of fantastic photography on botanical shapes, discoveries and beauty printed on various kinds of paper in a timeless coffee table magazine, The Plant opens the door to new ways of looking at nature. Each issue is graced by countless creatives that work amidst, with or by nature that opens the reader’s eyes to new perspectives. Moreover, each issue is themed by a specific plant – an exercise that entices countless international photographers, artists, designers, and musicians to tackle the beauty, properties and various elements of that one specific plant. Finally, each issue is held together by the personal experiences and intimate relations of everyone featured. It’s a cozy kind of magazine.

Issue 9, the summer issue, is all about the geranium. As The Plant’s tagline reads ‘a curious observer of ordinary plants and other greenery’, so it is. Not expecting much, an issue on geraniums seems almost disappointing – yet of course, it isn’t. The Plant looks at this ordinary plant in unbelievable ways: ways, to us, previously unheard of. As it’s a summer issue, the issue is all about flowers – and their celebratory effects and macabre properties: “a celebration of life, but also death. Because once the summer is over, feelings of nostalgia and delusion are pointless.” Thus writes editor Cristina Merino. This is testament to the fact the issue counts a varying interpretation of the flower, and the geranium in particular: it’s not all dandelions and butterflies. The Plant is an inherently personal magazine, giving it an edge that makes it pure joy to read.

Plant 4

Featuring Brazilian artist Roberto Burle Marx’s landscape designs, paintings and illustrations in an extensive interview and beautiful photography, The Plant looks at nature in the urban environment. A feature of floral arrangements inspired by various musical artists such as Bowie, Cobain and Houston, shows the magazine’s creative flair in looking a flowers – cheeky, striking, and with a healthy dose of humor. A D.I.Y guide on making dandelion paperweights again shows the magazine’s humoristic side, while a feature on recipes for floral ice-creams proves they do indeed look at nature in a practical manner as well. Personal experiences written and photographed in an intimate way, illustrations, visual and textual artwork inspired by the issue’s theme – The Plant is a must-read for everyone even remotely interested in nature. Honestly, you don’t have to be a gardener or botanical landscaper to appreciate the beauty, humor and intelligence of this magazine. Just find a bench in the soft summer sun and get to reading!
