Man Booker Prize 2016 voor Paul Beatty

De Man Booker Prize werd voor het eerst uitgereikt in 1969 en is sindsdien uitgegroeid tot de bekendste literaire prijs voor Engelstalige literatuur. Eerder wonnen onder anderen Marlon James (2015), Richard Flanagan (2014), Eleanor Catton (2013), Hilary Mantel (2012, 2009), Julian Barnes (2011) en Ian McEwan (1998) de prijs.

Beatty is de eerste Amerikaan die de prijs wint - drie jaar geleden werd de Booker voor het eerst opengesteld voor Amerikanen. Eerder dit jaar werd The Sellout bekroond met een National Book Critics Circle Award. Net als Marlon James wordt Beatty uitgegeven door de onafhankelijke uitgeverij Oneworld. In 2000 en 2001 werden al twee boeken van Beatty uitgegeven door Arena, maar de Nederlandse vertaling van The Sellout zal in het voorjaar van 2017 verschijnen bij Prometheus. We kennen zijn boek in Nederland vooral al door de internationale rel rond de kop van NRC-recensie van Guus Valk in augustus 2015.

The Sellout is a novel for our times. A tirelessly inventive modern satire, its humour disguises a radical seriousness. Paul Beatty slays sacred cows with abandon and takes aim at racial and political taboos with wit, verve and a snarl.

The Sellout is one of those very rare books: which is able to take satire, which is a very difficult subject and not always done well, and plunges it into the heart of contemporary American society with a savage wit of the kind I haven’t seen since Swift or Twain. It manages to eviscerate every social taboo and politically correct nuance, every sacred cow. While making us laugh, it also makes us wince. It is both funny and painful at the same time.’

De Nederlandse en Vlaamse pers las de genomineerden en voorspelde: Hans Bouman koos in de Volkskrant voor Thien, Marnix Verplancke was in De Morgen ook het enthousiastst over haar, Kathy Mathys kende in De Standaard vier sterren toe aan alle genomineerden behalve Levy en Beatty; Rob van Essen las voor NRC een deel van de shortlist, maar de enige vijf sterrenrecensie is van Robert Gooijer, voor Graeme Macrae Burnet. Voor de Britse gokkantoren was ook Thien favoriet.
