Vondel Prize 2015 voor Donald Gardner en Laura Watkinson

De tweejaarlijkse Vondel Prize is de prijs voor vertaling vanuit het Nederlands of Vlaams naar het Engels of Amerikaans. Het kunnen zowel literaire als cultuurhistorische werken betreffen. De prijs is ingesteld door de Engelse Society of Authors en wordt gefinancierd door het Nederlands Letterenfonds en het Vlaams Fonds voor de Letteren. Het prijzengeld bedraagt € 5.000,-. In 2013 won David Colmer, in 2011 Paul Vincent.

Donald Gardner kreeg de prijs voor zijn bloemlezing In Those Days. De jury:

'No sense of translation mars the effect of Remco Campert's poems as rendered so fluidly and feelingly by Donald Gardner. The landscape of a whole life is both painted and named specially - in a stirring, universalising way.'

Laura Watkinson kreeg hem voor haar vertaling van Tonke Dragts Brief aan de koning, The Letter for the King. De jury:

'The Letter for the King is a test-and-quest narrative of quite outstanding humanity and beauty, and this translation, honouring the tension and pace of the novel, preserves what readers love about Dragt's prose in Dutch - the way it pulls you into the story, conveys a vivid sense of character and action, and moves the reader along at a fast clip.'

Ook de andere zogenaamde 'translation prizes' werden uitgereikt, de Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize voor vertaling uit het Arabisch voor Paul Starkey, voor Youssef Rakha’s roman The Book of the Sultan’s Seal, de Schlegel-Tieck Prize voor vertaling uit het Duits voor Susan Bernofsky, voor haar vertaling van The End of Days door Jenny Erpenbeck, de Scott Moncrieff Prize voor vertaling uit het Frans voor Frank Wynne, voor zijn vertaling van Harraga door Boualem Sansal, de Premio Valle Inclán voor vertaling uit het Spaans voor Anne McLean voor haar vertaling van Outlaws door Javier Cercas, en de Bernard Shaw Prize voor vertaling uit het Zweeds voor Thomas Teal voor Tove Janssons The Listener.
