International Dublin Literary Award 2022 voor Alice Zeniter

De International Dublin Literary Award is een internationale prijs voor Engelse boeken en naar het Engels vertaalde romans (verschenen tussen 1 juli 2020 en 30 juni 2021, van de vertalingen mogen de oorspronkelijke boeken uitgegeven zijn tussen juli 2011 en juli 2021), gekozen uit een enorme longlist die door bibliotheken over de hele wereld is samengesteld - en waar dit jaar Connie Palmen en Marjolijn van Heemstra op stonden. Vorige jaren wonnen Valeria Luiselli (2021), Anna Burns (2020), Emily Ruskovich (2019), Mike McCormack (2018), José Eduardo Agualusa (2017), Akhil Sharma (2016), Jim Crace (2015), Juan Gabriel Vásquez (2014), Kevin Barry (2013), Jon McGregor (2012), Colm McCann (2011), Gerbrand Bakker (2010).

De burgemeester van Dublin en beschermvrouwe van de prijs, Alison Gilliland, zei:

‘With its themes of colonisation and immigration, The Art of Losing, which follows three generations of an Algerian family from the 1950s to the present day, highlights how literature can increase our understanding of the world. I’d like to congratulate Alice Zeniter and Frank Wynne and thank all who are involved in the award – writers, translators, librarians, publishers and the administrative staff of Dublin City Council.’

Zeniters dankwoord:

‘When I was writing The Art of Losing, I was almost certain that it was a niche novel. This book’s life, even five years after its release, keeps surprising me. I am really happy and thrilled that the Dublin Literary Award shows me today that this story can be shared with readers from different countries, readers who grew up outside the French post-colonial Empire. Readers that, maybe, had never thought about Algeria before opening the book. How crazy is that?”

Vertaler Frank Wynne (die al eerder bekroond werd met deze prijs, voor zijn Houellebecq-vertaling):

‘In a very real sense, I owe my career as a literary translator to the Dublin Literary Award, a prize I cherish because it makes no distinction between English and translated fiction, treating authors and translators as co-weavers of the  endless braid of literature.’

Dit was de shortlist, met twee Franse romans, een Nieuw-Zeelandse, Nigeriaans, Ierse en inheems-Canadese, is heel internationaal, zij het dat het met slechts twee vertalingen wel erg Engelstalig is. Alleen die twee Franse romans zijn naar het Nederlands vertaald. En natuurlijk valt op dat de winnaar van de vergelijkbare prijs de International Booker Prize (en de Europese Literatuurprijs), David Diop, ook hier genomineerd is.
