Recensie: Aristoteles was eigenlijk vooral nieuwsgierig. John Sellars maakt de filosoof toegankelijk

In de reeks handboeken van Penguin, de Pelican Books, verscheen onlangs John Sellars’ Aristotle: Understanding the World's Greatest Philosopher, een frisse inleiding op de denker. Aristoteles’ invloed op filosofie en wetenschap in de Griekse, Syrische, Arabische, Hebreeuwse en Latijnse tradities,  is enorm, het is fijn dat iemand probeert (en erin slaagt) om Aristoteles’ niet altijd even toegankelijke werk voor een breed publiek toegankelijk te maken.

Sellars is mede-redacteur van het Londense Ancient Commentators on Aristotle-project. Hij introduceerde al eerder Epicurus (and the Art of Happiness) en de Stoïcijnen (Lessons in Stoicism) voor leken. Aristoteles heeft een intimiderende reputatie, met dat grote en ingewikkelde oeuvre. Maar het zou jammer zijn als dat mensen ervan weerhoudt zijn werk te bestuderen. Of, zoals Sellars  in zijn inleiding schrijft:

‘As one of his translators has commented, “Aristotle is terse, compact, abrupt, his arguments condensed, his thought dense.” It’s not surprising that readers approaching him for the first time can feel intimidated.

It would be a great shame, however, if this stopped people from trying to learn more about Aristotle’s ideas, which have proved so influential. I suggest that we should all aspire to know at least something about these ideas and how they have shaped the way we think about things today. That is not to say that we all ought to embrace everything that he said and become card-carrying Aristotelians. That would be a decidedly un-Aristotelian outcome. He would not want us to accept his ideas as a fixed body of knowledge.’

Sellars benadrukt, kortom, Aristoteles’ wetenschappelijke nieuwsgierigheid naar het leven, het universum en alles. Sellars biedt een stevig overzicht van Aristoteles’ leven  en werk, en hij zoekt een antwoord op de vraag wat de antieke filosoof ons persoonlijk kan brengen. Aristoteles was iemand die dingen onderzocht en uittestte, iemand die doorvroeg. Die levenshouding, zegt Sellars in zijn slothoofdstuk, kan ieders leven interessanter kan maken. Wees als Aristoteles, wees onderzoekend.
