Er zijn verrassend weinig biografieën over Spinoza verschenen terwijl zijn gedachtegoed in de filosofische geschiedenis, politicologie en bijbelgeschiedenis van fundamenteel belang is geweest. Jonathans Israel heeft een biografie geschreven die meer details en context geven over Spinoza’s leven: over zijn familie, vriendenkring, carrière, netwerk en geschriften. Spinoza: Life & Legacy is een gedetailleerde biografie die heeft geleid tot een herziening van Spinoza’s filosofische interpretaties en gaat diep in op zijn opzienbarende carrièrepad.

Over Jonathan Israel

Jonathan Israel is geboren in Londen en heeft gestudeerd in Cambridge. Zijn PhD haalde hij in Oxford, met Hugh Trevor-Roper als promotor. Hij heeft dertig jaar bij verschillende Britse universiteiten lesgegeven voordat hij Professor in Moderne Geschiedenis werd bij het Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton. Sinds 2016 is hij met pensioen. 

Over Tinneke Beeckman

Tinneke Beeckman studeerde moraalwetenschappen aan de VUB en deed een aanvullende masteropleiding filosofie aan de ULB. Ze promoveerde aan de VUB en werkte jarenlang als aspirant en als postdoctoraal onderzoeker (FWO) in de academische wereld. Sinds 2012 is ze schrijver en columnist. In hetzelfde jaar publiceerde ze Door Spinoza’s lens (Pelckmans), in 2015 volgde Macht en onmacht. Een verkenning van de hedendaagse aanslag op de Verlichting (De Bezige Bij) en in 2020 Machiavelli’s lef. Levensfilosofie voor de vrije mens (Boom). Ze is columnist voor De Standaard en schrijft geregeld voor andere media, waaronder Knack.

Over Pooyan Tamimi Arab

Pooyan Tamimi Arab is universitair docent Religiewetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Zijn onderzoek combineert de antropologie van religie met politieke filosofie, waarbij de nadruk ligt op vragen rondom tolerantie, neutraliteit en publieke rede. Hij is de auteur van Why Do Religious Forms Matter? (2022, Palgrave) en Amplifying Islam in the European Soundscape (2017, Bloomsbury).

About Spinoza: Life & Legacy

There have been surprisingly few biographies of Spinoza, given his fundamental importance in intellectual history and history of philosophy, Bible criticism, and political thought. Jonathan Israel has written a biography which provides more detail and context about Spinoza's life, family, writings, circle of friends, highly unusual career and networking, and early reception than its predecessors. Weaving the circumstances of his life and thought into a detailed biography has also led to several notable instances of nuancing or revising our notions of how to interpret certain of his assertions and philosophical claims, and how to understand the complex international reaction to his work during his life-time and in the years immediately following his death.

About Jonathan Israel

Jonathan Israel was born and educated in London, graduated at Cambridge, and gained his PhD at Oxford under the supervision of Hugh Trevor-Roper. He taught for thirthy years in British Universities before being appointed Professor of Modern History ath the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. He retired in 2016.

Tinneke Beeckman is a Belgian philosopher, lecturer and columnist for Knack and De Standaard. Amongst her publications are Door Spinoza’s lens (2012), Macht en onmacht (2015) and Machiavelli’s lef (2015) which was awarded with the Hypatia Prize and shortlisted for the Socratesbeker.

About Pooyan Tamimi Arab

Pooyan Tamimi Arab (moderator) is an assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of the University of Utrecht. His research combines social scientific approaches to religious studies with political philosophy.
